WPI-8 / NEXT STEPS

How do you get your WPI-8?

A homeowner guide from TBAR Roofing.

There are two different tasks: arrange certification for work you are about to do, or find a certificate already issued for your property. Start with the one that fits your situation.

For a new roof project

  1. Confirm the property is in the designated area and the planned work requires inspection.
  2. Find an appointed qualified inspector through TDI and submit the WPI-1 application before construction begins.
  3. Arrange the required inspections while the work is accessible.
  4. After construction, the inspector submits verification; TDI reviews it and issues the certificate if approved.

TDI provides the application and inspector search through its Windstorm System. Local permit requirements are separate, so ask the city or county about permits too.

To find an existing certificate

Open TDI’s windstorm page and select the WPI-8/WPI-8E certificate search. On the system homepage, choose “Find a Certificate.” You can search with the application or certificate number, or by address. TDI says a partial address can work when paired with a city, ZIP code, or county.

For a WPI-8-C issued by TWIA for qualifying completed construction between January 2017 and May 2020, TDI points users to TWIA’s separate certificate lookup.

If the roof work is already finished

Ask TDI about the completed-construction route rather than assuming a regular in-progress WPI-8 can still be issued. TDI describes a WPI-8E process involving a Texas licensed professional engineer and supporting documentation. The available path depends on the work and the records that exist.
