- Asphalt shingles. These have been the staple of the industry for generations. There have been several design innovations in recent years creating more dramatic and natural looks. They are still the most popular due to their natural look, cost effectiveness, and now the broad range of colors and styles to meet any design criteria. We install them with a six nail pattern as opposed to the four nail used by most contractors. This provides for wind resistance and adds to the warranty against weather damage.
- Metal. This material has grown in popularity a great deal in recent years due to its strength and energy efficiency. It can last approximately three times longer than asphalt shingles – the average for asphalt is seventeen years whereas metal may last 40 years or longer. Painted metal has been tested for heat absorption and was found to absorb 40 percent less heat than asphalt shingles. Galvanized steel has become very popular in the south due to its resistance to hurricane force winds.
- Slate. It is without question, this is the most eye catching and beautiful material. Being a natural stone it will grow moss and spout seeds but regular maintenance avoids this. It is has exceptionally long life and is used mostly on Tudor and Victorian Style houses.
- Ceramic tile is very beautiful and heavy, weighing from 6 to 17 pounds per square foot. Spanish style ceramic is very popular in the Southwest and in Florida for use on Spanish and Mediterranean style houses. Metal roofing can now mimic ceramic tile.
